Stevens Model 311 Shotgun Help Stevens 311 Plunger Replacement From Driftwood Johnson Pards I have been overwhelmed with e-mail regarding the $7 fix to help keep a Stevens from closing halfway. So I got smart and decided to try and post the solution (and gave Marauder permission.) Disclaimer: I did not come up with this solution, another Pard did, and I am just passing the information along. I'm sorry to say I don't remember his name, but the original information and the pictures are from him, and we owe him a debt of thanks, because this solution worked for me. What follows is the information on the $7 fix for Stevens 311 Shotguns The replacment is shown above. Noticd that it is smooth - no bump. The part numbers often change. Note Part Number 22 - the cocking lever.

If yours looks like this - with a bump on the end, you are eleigible for the replacement that may help keep your gun open. If your Cocking Plunger has a bump, this fix should help. If it already looks like the one in the Replacement Cocking Plunger, don't bother, this fix won't help. It is the bump at the end that makes the difference. Or you can file down the bump to help. Ordering information: Numrich Gun Parts Corp. Orders: (845) 679-2417 Item # 167570L (Cocking Plunger) Gun part is for - Stevens 511 A We have had trouble getting the part because the numbers change and Numrich doesn't seem to know the difference.

Updates to follow as several folks are researching this. Installation: Separate barrels from receiver.

Turn barrels upside down. On the top surface of the lug that contacts the hinge pin you will see a slotted screw. Remove the screw. Remove the cocking plunger (be careful not to drop the spring). Remove spring and put in new cocking plunger. Install in reverse order. This fix works best with uncut barrels, the longer the better, since gravity still assists in keeping the barrels open.

It is not a complete solution, but does help a lot. You still need to push the barrels open once spring resistance is felt, but there will be less tendency for them to close. Mine stays open by gravity. It is a 16 gauge with 28 inch barrels. Not a bad fix for under $10. Five minute installation.

After some investigation the part is for Stevens Model 511 and Model 511 series A shogtuns, not for a 311 H as thought. Currently, the itemĀ“s number is 167570L. One in good condition would be worth $250-$350 to me. I am looking for a 16 ga. I don't know when your question was posted, but if you still have the gun.

Let me know if you want to get rid of your shotgun. I just bought a Stevens 311 in 16ga for $325. Actualy i traded a savage model 24 for it and the guy gave me $225 for the model 24.($225+$100=$325) Are these shotguns chambers 2 3/4', or are they 2 9/16' (65mm)? I have a Sears Roebuck 16ga. Side-by-side for sale.

You can get me at lukemack59@yahoo.com or at 615+788+5117, Luke. I am in the final stages of completing the restoration of a model 311a 12 ga. The disassembly of your 311h 20 ga should be identical. That is to first be sure the gun is unloaded, after this has been ascertained the action is closed. At this point the forearm can be removed by placing the tip of the index finger between the front of the forearm and the barrels and pulling down. After the forearm is removed press the breakdown lever to the right which will unlock the action at which time the barrels can be lifed off the receiver.

At this point you may remove the butt stock by removing the 2 screws in the butt plate and taking a long flat point screw driver and removing the stock bolt. Be careful when you are removing the butt stock and pull it directly to the rear. Hope this is helpful. The 311 started as the Springfield 5000 about 1920 and the model designation changed to 5100 in 1931 and about 1940 it became the 311. In 1948 the Springfield line was dropped and it became the Stevens 311 until it was discontinued in 1989. Answer If it was manufactured between 1949 and 1968 there will be a small circle with a number and a letter stamped between the trigger and the hinge pin. The letter indicates the year of manufacture.

If it is marked 'J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co' it was made before 1920 and, of course, after the 1907 patent date. If it has exposed hammers and twist or damascus barrels, it's primary value is as a mantle decoration (probably $125-$150), but if it is hammerless with fluid steel barrels and 2 3/4' cham bers, it could still be a shooter ($250+/-) if checked and approved by a competent gunsmith. Why are you so quick to condemm anything that has Hammers, twist or Damascus Barrels. Enlighten yourself and start reading the Double Gun and Single Shot Journal. Competent people there have tested these old guns with proof loads and found none to be lacking in strength. What you are saying has all been debunked.

I will take a Double or single Damascus barreled gun to the field any day, sure i will measure the chambers and fit my ammunition to the gun and not fire proof loads in it everytime. Clue yourself in and take some advice from someone who has shot for a long time, your maximum loads and 3 inch shells wont fill your bag if you cant put them in the right place. Does it say J. Stevens AND Co or J.

Stevens ARMS & TOOL Co or J. Stevens ARMS Co? The first would have been made from 1865 to 1886, the second from 1886 to 1915, and the third from 1920 to about 1945 (unlikely if it has damascus barrels). Value is $100 - $300 depending on condition, bu t only as a mantle decoration. Damascus or twist barrels were fine when they were produced, but were not intended for modern smokeless ammunition. Even if they were proofed for smokeless powder circa 1900, today's smokeless is not the same and after a century the barrels have probably deteriorated.
