I have had problems with it from the first day I purchased it. I have tried to get it serviced while it was under warranty but Generac was of no help. I have used a smaller back up generator.

I just can't get this unit to run for any length of time before it cuts out. I have at great expense tried to fix this unit. Hoping someone could help me. It looks and sounds great just very undependable. Also important was its ability to produce 'clean' power so that my fear of using my computer while on back-up power would be minimized.
Have not yet had an opportunity to test it for home back-up, and hopefully never will. Once my transfer switch and inlet receptacle are installed we will give it a thorough test. The GFCI protection on this unit made selecting the correct transfer switch a bit more challenging. But that is all figured out and I expect to be able to power almost 100% of our home once everything is installed. I do not yet have enough hours on this unit to feel qualified to comment on its total performance and reliability. I recently bought it new and the very first time I went to start it the cheap, plastic choke pull broke off and it was not possible to start the machine. I contacted Generac without resorting to write a review and they responded with a prepared and canned letter that showed they did not care about the quality of their product. If a small part, like a choke pull s so cheap that it falls apart even before the first use then I will logically assume that it is cheaply built overall. Would buy it again if I needed another. A couple things I would like to see changed for future models. 'Idle Control' feature - you can just remove this.
It is not stated explicitly or implicitly anywhere, but when idle control is active, the generator produces 85V, which I hard am hard pressed to think of an electronic device you would want to torture with this voltage. It is supposed to detect load and increase engine speed, but you can load it with quite a few things before it recognizes the need to exit idle control (e.g. Refrigerator, coffee maker, fan.all running simultaneously did NOT trigger idle control override). Easier use for home power.
This specific model requires a mod on the 50A outlet to use this for home power. I realize this may be used extensively as an on-site gennie for construction sites, but it is the only 'home' model that is compatible with sensitive electronics (i.e. It produces a 'pure' sinewave). Given this, it should be a natural that people would want to use this for home power in an outage. I am currently jumping through hoops to make that dream a reality.
Something else that is hinted at in the manual, but isn't entirely clear, is the fact that it really must be run on a level surface. I was running it when it couldn't have been more than 10 degrees off level, and it simply wouldn't produce power at the receptacles. Once I put it on a purely level surface, everything worked just fine.
In spite of all this, I am quite happy with the generator. Nothing else out there equals the features the xp10ke has.
Fuel that is not going to used- even for short periods of time should be treated with fuel stabilizer to slow the rate of deterioration, gumming and varnish formation. Following the fuel stabilizer manufacturer's recommendations, treat the quantity of the fuel remaining in the fuel tank.
Open the fuel valve, start and operate the engine for 30 minutes. Close the fuel valve and operate until the engine stops. This circulates treated fuel through lines and carburetor. The fuel can be drained or left in the tank. Can I convert my portable generator to run on a different fuel besides gasoline?
The hourmeter will alert the owner continuously for one hour (of run time) before and until one hour after scheduled maintenance has been reached. This includes oil changes (at 100 hours) or air filter service (at 200 hours). As hours of operation continue to accumulate, the hourmeter will automatically reset itself until the next 100 or 200 hour service interval is reached. See the Hourmeter section of your owner's manual for additional information. The hourmeter on some generator models have a reset button that allows the operator to move between maintenance intervals and reset intervals by holding the reset button for nine seconds.

Portable generator should never be operated inside an enclosed space or contrary to any provision or warning contained in your Owner's Manual. However, portable generators are intended to be used during extreme weather and for the sensitive electronics on them, it is best if some sort of open covering can be used to protect it from direct rain or snow. Great options would be a car port or boat canopy with four open sides or a tarp hung from a tree. It is very important to provide adequate ventilation for the generator, so any sort of protection should be at least five feet from any side (including the top of the unit) while in use. Additionally, a portable generator should always be stored inside when not in use to prevent unnecessary wear and tear. BE ADVISED, the generator should NEVER be used in any enclosed space including, without limitation, a shed, home, garage, trailer, or vehicle, even if the doors are left open, as this can be a serious fire hazard and carbon monoxide risk. How long can I operate the generator?
Does it need a 'break'? Yes, remove all loads before turning the generator off. First, turn off all appliances, lights and items being powered by the generator.
Then, unplug the items from the generator's receptacles and allow the generator to cool. Once you've done this, it is safe to turn the generator off.
NEVER turn the generator off while loads are applied. Refer to the Generator Loads section of your owner's manual for complete instruction on adding and removing electrical devices. If the generator is being used, how do I connect or disconnect electrical devices? Proper grounding of the generator, when used to back-up a building's utility power, will prevent electrical shock in the event of a ground fault condition in the generator or the connected electrical devices. Proper grounding also helps dissipate static electricity which often builds up in ungrounded devices. The National Electric Code requires that the frame and externally conductive parts of this generator be properly connected to an approved earth ground. Local electrical codes may also require proper groundingof the unit.
For that purpose, connecting a No. 10 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded copper wire to the grounding lug and to an earth driven copper or brass grounding rod (electrode) provides adequate protection against electrical shock.
However, local codes may vary widely. Consult with a local electrician for grounding requirements in the area. How often should I start/operate my generator between outages? Most portable generators do not charge their batteries when running. Two Generac GP models, the 15,000 and the 17,500 and all electric start XP models charge their batteries while operating. Generac electric start generators, except those two GP models come with an external charger.
The customer should charge the battery at least once a month for 24-48 hours in preparation for usage. If the battery is dead, most of the portables have a recoil backup (pull start). In emergency situations, the customer can charge the battery by plugging the charger cord into the receptacle on the generator while it is running. This is not recommended for typical operation.
