The AAP Washington, DC office advocates with congressional offices, federal agencies and liaisons with other organizations concerned with child and adolescent health, and the media. The office provides credible background information, expert testimony, pediatric contacts nationwide, and media outreach on the multitude of health and social issues that confront children, families and policymakers. The AAP Washington, DC office has two internship programs available: one for pediatricians and pediatricians-in-training, and one for undergraduate students with a focus on advocacy and public affairs.

Internship for pediatricians and pediatricians-in-training: Since 1981, the AAP Washington Office has had an internship program primarily designed for those interested in learning about child health policy, the legislative process, federal advocacy, and public affairs activities. The internship program is available to medical students, residents, and fellow trainees.
While this program is individualized, examples of internship activities include:. Hearings and briefings: Interns attend congressional hearings on a variety of child health issues. Interns may also attend Committee meetings, public meetings at federal agencies, general oversight hearings, and/or educational briefings. Research: Interns assist with the preparation of background material on federal policy issues. Coalitions: Interns learn the value of forming useful collaborations with other organizations that have similar goals. Interns have the opportunity to attend coalition meetings with AAP staff and independently. Media: Interns with an interest in journalism can work with public affairs staff on communicating legislative issues effectively to reporters, AAP members and the general public.
Internship Application and Requirements Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. In addition to completing the application form, please email the following documents to. a 500-word written statement.
The written statement is a key element of the application and should include an example of the applicant’s advocacy experience, a statement of the applicant’s interest in advocacy and how the applicant thinks this internship will impact their future advocacy efforts. CV/Resume. a signed Decisions are made by a selection committee and applicants are notified via e-mail.
Applicants should make the committee aware of any program deadlines relevant to the selection date. Interested candidates should apply as soon as possible as the department accepts a maximum of two interns at any given time. Applications are accepted a minimum of 90 days prior to desired internship dates and maybe submitted up to one year in advance. Internships are a minimum of 4 consecutive weeks. Interns work Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Internships can be scheduled at any time during the year except for the month of August.
